This village has a centuries-old history. Its name probably derives from the Arabic word "Joxan", which can be translated as "rough" or "bitter", referring to the rugged terrain and local mineral-rich water. The village name is pronounced roughly as "o-hen".
Among the greatest attractions of Ojen are the Cueva de las Columnas and Cueva de las Campanas caves located right on the seafront, the charming Old Town with its traditional architecture and narrow streets, the picturesque Fuente de los Chorros fountain dating from 1905, the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación church, and the Refugio de Juanar hunting lodge, which once belonged to the Larios family.
